Background

Already in 2013, the Sustainability Office conducted a pilot project, called “Refiller-Friendly University Basel”. Over the course of two months, the project attempted to make the university more sustainable by providing reusable cups in the cafeterias. The project is now reinitiated by students of the AG Nachhaltigkeit in cooperation with the Catering Committee and the SV Services.

Goal of the project

The goal of the project is the reduction of non-recyclable coffee cups at the university. This will then also lead to the reduction of waste in the cafeterias.

Status

The project will begin in November 2020 in in the cafeterias of the Kollegienhaus and the main library. Initially, customers’ awareness  of the issue shall be raised through posters and information seminars. The team has created a video showing the amount of used coffee cups at the cafeterias of the university of Basel. In a final step, recycable coffee cups with the logo of the university and the SV services should be made available and sold  at the different cafeterias
